Duet Display App Reviews

What the future will hold

Since the beginning of the iPad Ive always felt it would one day become as powerful as our computers. Duet gives this appearance by allowing your iPad to become an external screen to your MacBook. Ive been using it more for playing videos on my iPad and typing out my notes on my MacBook Pro. While I could simply transfer the files on the iPad and do the same job I would in turn have to remove the files at a later time. Duet brings much more to the table and the possibility seems endless without the hassle of transferring files or waiting for Apple to catch up to future ideas. I simply dont know why I didnt purchase this earlier.

Needs work

I have used this app for 3 weeks now for school. This is a great alternative instead of buying another monitor. My ipad lags, the screen bar is a solid black, or screen issues, however. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app and the same problem occurs. I have read all the suggestions on their website and I have a current generation iPad. This app is awesome. I hope they can fix these issues.

computer crashes on restart

got this for my lenovo y500 running windows 10. pc app has reboot looped my computer twice now forcing me to reset windows twice and losing all my apps. seems like a cool app. too bad i never got to use it. wish i could get my money back.

Works perfectly, awesome app

I am an engineer that travels a lot, and with the transition from my 17" Macbook Pro to a 15" I needed a way to increase screen real estate. I have used other apps that worked via wireless, but I found that aside from issues with stability, many hotel wireless infrasturctures didnt allow me to connect from my iPad to my laptop. Duets ability to work through a connected USB cable is priceless, and highly performant. The one thing I havent tried yet is connecting through a USB hub, though. I hope that works if/when I need to. I HIGHLY recommend this app. Im using it right now, in fact. :-)

Great until you start to stress the system

Everything functions well but crashes every time I start doing something that stresses the system (e.g., flipping through tabs in excel). Mouse pointer disappears quite often too and I have to bring it back to my laptop screen and back to iPad to get it to work. Works fine to reference things on but also bugs me that I cant get resolution to a good match to my Dell XPS 15 running Windows 10.

Update Broke App

This used to be a really cool and useful app, giving me an additional monitor in a pinch. But their newest update (not even optional) that offered supposed "performance enhancements" freezes unless Im mirroring my monitor to my ipad, which completely ruins the usefulness of this app for me. I need the additional monitor. Additionally, while the resolution used to match my ipad perfectly without affecting my mac screen, now when the display is mirrored to the ipad its stretched out with black bars at the top and bottom, distorting the screen, and the screen on my mac becomes a square with black bars on the right and left. I dont know what they were trying to do with this new forced update but it completely ruined the usefulness of a once cool app. I would not recommend this app until its fixed If the devs are reading this, Im using a MacBook Pro 13" from 2009 running 10.9.5 and an iPad mini running 7.1.1. Please fix this

Excellent

The app works as advertised each and every time. Or use it all the time with my 12.9 inch iPad Pro, and it makes an amazing secondary screen!

Disappointed

Before I decided to purchase the app, I read reviews, comparisons and articles. I hesitated to spend that much for any app but all the reviews indicated that Duet was the way to go. I run a 2011 Macbook Pro and a retina iPad 3. Maybe my technology is too dated but the first disappointment is the latency. This was one of the key points it was touted over but I find it very laggy. At every video setting, it is laggy. 2nd issue is ghosting and artifacting of the display on my iPad as well. I havent determined why it occurs because it isn’t all the time but when it happens, its unusable. Otherwise, I could possibly live with the lag, but wouldnt have paid 18.99 had I known how bad it would be. I hate to be negative about it, but I simply dont think it was worth the money. It is a great idea and has tremendous potential but I question if I will get any use out of it with my setup.

Not a cintiq alternative

Barely works, crashes constantly and I have a decent Windows 10 workstation for professional work. Had I known the pressure sensitivity is "on its way" I probably would have waited to purchase this iPad and this app. Big promises and no delivery on pro features. Thought it was a viable option for a cintiq - sadly proven wrong again.

OK

The one that I can tell is : This app is really nice.

Works, but not very well

Im using this app with my 13 inch MacBook Pro as well as my iPad Air 2, and while this app works, it is very laggy and not very useful to me. Also, when I full screen something on my Mac, the display disappears on the iPad. The description says that the touch screen on the iPad can be used while using this app, but whenever I try to use it the app shuts down. I wish I would have never spent the money on this app.

Experienced an Unstable App

This seemed very useful, and I wanted to love this app. I purchased it intending to use it professionally. Unfortunately Ive stopped using it due to the instability of the app. At least once an hour my screens would flash and connection would be lost. My iPad prompted me to connect to the PC, and the PC would actually return me to the network login screen. Every time this happen I would be booted off my VPN and even lose work. I did attempt to contact support, and they advised me to upgrade my app. That was it. Unfortunately, that did not help and I cant afford to lose anymore time/work on this app.

Excellent product, excellent service.

I love it! It has easily double my productivity. I did have an issue, at one point it stopped working with my PC and I had given up on it. I decided to contact customer service, explain the problem and they sent me a file to download and it fixed it immediately. I was right back to work. thanks again for the help Joseph. Great product. Highly recommended.

Same Windows 10 issues

Im hanging on to the app and hoping for future updates that fix the Windows 10 crash on launch. They really tried thoroughly to fix my issue but no luck. Same crash no matter what tweak was applied. For now Im using astropad on my old iMac. Update: It finally "works". Its impossible to use any Adobe program with this. Everything lags to the point where it is totally useless. Astropad has ZERO lag. Unfortunately my main computer is a pc and this was the only option. Nice guys but terrible product for PC users. Hopefully Astropad decides to make a PC version of their program.

Replaced my Cinema Display

Im a product designer, Cinema Displays come standard at the office but its more real estate than what I need, I prefer working on the Macbook and having another small screen on the side dedicated to distractions (email, Slack, Twitter, YouTube etc.). Plus I love carrying my iPad Pro around, sketching concepts w/ the Apple Pencil. Simply put, Duet works perfectly and has allowed me to cut out the huge Cinema Display in favor of my iPad, ready and charged at all times. My only request would be the ability to have keyboard input from the Pro keyboard, but Im not knocking off any stars given that Im not certain that its possible. Lastly, my experience communicating with their product team has been great, five stars all around. Thanks for this awesome app!

Memory Hog

Holy bogs-down your system. Often restarts. Great idea and Id bet great people behind the app. I guess this is what I get for being forced to use Windows at work.

A second monitor while traveling

A great way to add a second monitor while traveling, also about the only reason Id buy the iPad Pro - so I can use it with this app.

Do not waist your money!

I have a MacBook Air, and a iPad mini. This app has a terrible lag, you cant move your curser back to Mac screen after its on the iPad, tried to open safari on iPad wouldnt open, could not really get anything on the iPad to work. Curser has bad lag moves very slow. I had high hopes with this because I could really use this option for work, need a compact portable 2nd screen option.

Extremely handy app + great support

Not only do you get a great app that allows you to turn that ipad into a 2nd screen, but you get amazing service and support as well. As far as app developers go, the CEO replied to my emails about support when I had an issue running a beta. Customer service is why I gave this a 5 star rating. Its a component that is often left out of business and its nice to see that he takes it seriously.

Very Laggy

Horrible app. Very laggy. That was your number one selling point wasnt it? Im running a high end 15" MBP and 12" IPad Pro and this app slows both my MBP and iPad down. I cant even look at a simple PDF on preview without it acting like Im running an old 90s windows machine. I wish I could get my $19 back. Worse App Store gamble Ive made.
